2018 Charcoal Experience Dates
Saturday 12th May,
Saturday 14th July,
Saturday 22nd September
At Bulworthy Project we like to create a relaxed atmosphere in which to learn.
You will leave having not only learned a new skill but also inspired and invigorated after a great time in the woods.
Although we hope for beautiful sunny weather, if it rains we have adequate undercover space to ensure that everyone remains warm and dry.
Charcoal Making Experience
This experience is hosted by Anna and Pete Grugeon
Spend a day in a beautiful woodland setting, experiencing the life of a charcoal maker. Learn how to make high quality sustainable charcoal with professional charcoal makers, experience a charcoal makers life and gain an insight into how it feels to live and work in the woods. A guided walk in the woods is included in the experience where you will get to see what plants and fungi we are foraging in that season, see how sustainable harvesting of wood for charcoal supports habitat management and meet our chickens and pigs who love the woodland life as much as we do. This course is fully catered. Tea, coffee and refreshments will be provided at regular intervals and lunch (and for those who choose to stay overnight an evening meal and breakfast) will be provided using locally produced and foraged food cooked over Devon’s finest charcoal. By the end of the of the charcoal experience you will have learned how to make charcoal in a metal ring kiln, have a good overview of charcoal production and we’ll give you a bag of charcoal for your own barbecue.
You have the option to stay overnight as the kiln burns so that you can close it down in the morning when the burn is over. You will have already seen a mini demo-kiln closed down during the day which is enough to understand the process, but this allows you to see the full sized kiln right the way through the burn. It also allows you to spend the evening around the campfire eating, drinking and making merry whilst the charcoal kiln chugs away in the background. An evening meal, overnight camping in the woods and breakfast is included in this option.
