3 Day Bowmaking Course
1 Day Bowmaking Course

Matthew Yung who teaches these course has an infectious enthusiasm about bowmaking and how you can harness the properties of wood.
As a result these courses are not only informative but are in themselves a fantastic experience and you even get to leave with a bow that you have made yourself.

Although we hope for beautiful sunny weather, if it rains we have adequate undercover space to ensure that everyone remains warm and dry.

One Day Course

Saturday the 19th of May 2018

This bowmaking day gives you the opportunity to make a working bow in a day. These bows are simple in design, effective and at the end of the day we’ll set up an archery target so that you can try out your bow. Having been taught to select and identify suitable wood for bowmaking, you will get to work with a length of coppiced hazel and under Matthews careful guidance through carving and shaping you will form it into a well engineered even tillered bow using hand tools which are little different to those used hundreds of years ago. This is a great fun day and an introduction to the skills required to produce a fully working simple woodland bow from natures resources. You will taught the traditional method of string-making using linen and given an arrow, then at the end of the day there will be an opportunity to test your bow and archery skills with some target practice.

This is a fully catered course and includes lunch, hot beverages and snacks throughout the day.

The course is intended for adults and is demanding in terms of concentration. We normally only accept course participants over 16 years old.
We make an exception where an adult and a child over 12 years old both book on the course and the adult takes resposibility for supervising the child.

Three Day Course

Saturday 8th to Monday 10th of June 2018

During this 3 day course you will make a fully working flat bow similar to those found at Holmegaard in Denmark which are believed to have dated from around 7000 BC. This is an ancient design of bow and is very effective. The bows made on this course will have a draw weight of over 50lbs making them suitable for the primative bow category of archery competitions. Having been taught to select and identify appropriate wood for bowmaking, you will start to work on a ¼ split ash log and under Matthews careful guidance you will first rough it out into the basic shape and then through carving and tillering form it into a well engineered bow using hand tools which are little different to those used hundreds of years ago. You will be taught the traditional method of string-making using linen and given an arrow.

The course cost includes overnight camping on the Saturday and Sunday night, all of your meals for the duration of the course, the use of a shower and a constant supply of hot beverages and snacks.

The course is intended for adults and is demanding in terms of concentration. We normally only accept course participants over 16 years old.
We make an exception where an adult and a child over 12 years old both book on the course, the adult takes resposibility for supervising the child and they have both previously completed the 1 day course.
